On Canada Day weekend the 2009 Pride Mite Selects completed the undefeated season and won the Provincial Championship. The team finished the round robin with a 4-0 record behind a strong pitching staff effort that only gave up 8 runs over the four games and clinched them first place overall in the round robin and a first round bye in the knockout round. Championship Monday did not disappoint as the girls took on South Surrey White Rock in the Semifinal with strong defense, some timely hitting and a stellar pitching effort by Julia Waterman going 6 innings striking out 16 hitters while only giving up 2 hits and a walk propelling the girls to an 8-1 win. The Pride faced a tough Langley Wild squad in the Final and the game was 0-0 in to the bottom of the fourth because of dominant pitching by Jasmin Tilley and outstanding defence on the left side of the infield by Bella-Rose Tyson and Rhaya Mooney. Madeline Mitchell jumpstarted the offence in the fourth and Ridge Meadows took a 1-0 lead in to fifth when Langley tied it up in the top. The defence continued for Ridge Meadows with Catcher Holly Ross making an enormous catch in foul territory on a pop up and Jasmin Tilley making a running catch by the foul line to end an inning. The Pride responded in the bottom of the fifth when Julia Waterman laced a single to right field. Sara MacDonald stepped to the plate and drove her home and with some heads up baserunning and a perfect slide at home extended the lead to 3-1. A Jada Manion crushed triple in the bottom of 6 scored Annalise Ramak and added to a lead the Pride would never relinquish as they won 4-2. The girls played with high energy all weekend and kept their teammates pumped up for all 7 innings in the Final.
The girls had a great season and were led by Head Coach Katie Ross and Hitting Coach Kelly Stead, both of the Garibaldi Softball Academy. The Garibaldi Softball Academy is a partnership between Ridge Meadows Minor Softball Association and School District 42 which offers students the chance to hone their skills on the diamond in conjunction with developing their abilities to cope with stress and perform optimally at a high level.
Congrats girls on all your accomplishments. Provincial Champions, 3 Tournament Gold Medals and 43-0.
